The duo Nolwenn Le Guern and Julien Pellegrini invite us into an intimate dialogue, a journey towards the other, in a world where all our enriched subjectivities are more essential than ever.
This poetic introspection unfolds through soundscapes created by gut-stringed vielles and various percussion instruments, all enhanced by electronic processing.
MiRoiR explores La Mutation de fortune by the famous Christine de Pisan (c. 1364–1431). In it, she recounts how Fortune presided over the vicissitudes of her life, first depriving her of her husband and then saving her from the storm by transforming her from a woman into a man. A dream of transidentity, of liberation through metamorphosis.
The enigmatic rondeau Ma fin est mon commencement by Guillaume de Machaut (1300–1377) echoes this.
Metamorphosis lies at the heart of this journey. It becomes a means of erasing physical boundaries, allowing objects to resonate as if they were changing in substance. The voice—whether recited or sung—a mirror of our intimacy and our collective memories, accompanies this transformation.
MiRoiR seeks to create a harmonious fusion between the medieval world and the contemporary world. This is particularly evident in the works composed especially for the duo: Ehwa Hong’s Mutation de corps and Robert Pascal’s Herbes Rases, with their mixed, impure timbres and their timeless, earthy character.
Thus, MiRoiR does not merely seek to look back at the past.
It seeks to discover our eternal transformations within it.
To hear within it what we may yet become
MiRoiR is an invitation to look beyond the reflection and recognise ourselves in the eyes of another.
